September 12th. Rhyl
What a relief, some good weather for a change! We actually managed a trip, on Jensen II with Simon.
A 6.15 start saw us heading out to the wrecks, stopping on the way for a few mackerel (only a few caught, with a lot of effort).
We shared the first wreck with a boat from Fleetwood, this wreck gave us Pollack to 8lbs when drifting with artificials.
Anchoring on the same wreck during the slack water at the top of the tide gave some ling to 10lbs and one conger at about 20lbs.
As the tide run started again it was back to drifting, with little being caught on any of the wrecks we tried.
We didn’t have much luck with the mackerel on the way back to port either, apparently the strong winds earlier in the week had broken up the shoals.
Whitby 21st June
Shy Torque.
Ten of us boarded Shy Torque at 7.00 on a dull but WINDLESS Sunday morning – all raring to go after the previous two club trips had been cancelled due to high winds. As usual, the tackle shop had a good day.
The skipper (Richard) took us to various wrecks and rough ground, the best of which was a sunken gas rig – unfortunately we had to move from there, we were in danger of losing all of our end gear.
Everybody caught fish, nothing massive – the largest probably reached 8 lbs – mainly cod, there was one ling (and several pouting).
All methods worked: shads, pirks, squid-baited hokkais and whole squid as bait. Nothing we had worked as well as the small shads in moon green and orange/black stripe that the skipper and his mate used though.
Weather was warm, the sun broke out in the afternoon AND THE WIND DIDN’T BLOW.
We will book again next year
Saturday 10th January.
River Mersey on Atlantis.
A day of Fs.
Flipping Freezing! Although not quite as cold as previous days, there was ice in the gunnels that did not thaw all day. It made handling the frozen squid a real joy.
Fantastic Fireworks! We had a close up view of the show put on to celebrate the year of Liverpool’s City of Culture status. Probably a better view than the crowd on the landing stage as we could see the magnificent lighting effects on the front of the Liver building too.
Few Fish! The cod did not come out to play. A change to smaller hooks and bait yielded tiny whiting and dabs with some takeable ones amongst them.
As ususal, we enjoyed the day out. The strong tide certainly helped to keep our uptiding skills honed, as usual Ken was there with his practical help and advice.
